UPDATE: Mother Identified In Crash That Killed 3-Year-Old Son

SAMPSON COUNTY — A single-vehicle accident on Autry Mill Road has left one child dead and several others injured, including two children who were ejected from the vehicle.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 6:34 p.m. Tuesday, when a 2004 Ford Expedition traveling north on Autry Mill Road ran off the right shoulder of the road near U.S. Highway 13. Authorities say the driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to veer back onto the road, then off the left side, where it struck a ditch and a tree. The impact caused the SUV to overturn several times before coming to a stop upright in a yard, facing south.

The driver has been identified as Brittiney Simmons, 33, of Autryville. She was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Wake Medical Center with injuries. Officials confirmed she was the only restrained occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

There were three juvenile passengers in the vehicle, all children of Simmons. Two of them — a 13-year-old and a 5-year-old — were ejected from the SUV and sustained injuries. One was transported to Wake Med, and the other was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Tragically, 3-year-old Walker Lambert, also a son of Simmons, died at the scene.

Troopers say speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash. It is not yet known whether impairment played a role.

The collision remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.

  1. Very sad to hear this. Hopefully the mother is charged in the senseless death of her child along with the injuries to the other. Its mind boggling just how people dumb people can be.

  2. She made sure she was restrained yet 3 kids were NOT? REALLY? Makes me so angry! The only good thing I can say is that’s one child Satan won’t get!!

  3. How sad your life must be for your first thought to be to charge the mother after one of her children was killed.

    • Buckle up please. I feel so sad for all envolved. The mother has got to live with these deaths for the rest of her life. I pray for her and may God bring her confort in the days ahead. Buckle up it may save a life, plus it is the law.

    • I don’t think that it’s sad at all. She had her seatbelt on while her three kids did not. It is the law that all occupants in a vehicle have seatbelts on. Plus, the article said speed was a factor. She is the adult and should have made better judgement. She is the reason her children was harmed, one fatal. She should be charged.

      • So after feeling all the shame you bunch of a**holes are going to rain down on her for her poor decision making, and the guilt she is going to have to live with for the rest of her life for killing her own child, you all here think that’s not enough and she should ALSO be criminally punished, which will hurt her financially as well. I sure hope you all raise your kids to make better choices than this woman did, but also to be nicer people than you all are as well.

        • Bottom line is she neglected her children and protected herself before protecting her children. Guess you don’t see anything wrong with that.

        • So who advocates for the children? One dead and two ejected and likely critically injured. Who is to blame if not the mom? Parents have a duty not a choice to protect their children at all costs. Certainly a three year old doesn’t have the ability yet to make a sound decision to be restrained properly in a vehicle. Im not saying continue to berate her, but what happens to the next child that gets in a vehicle and are unrestrained and a wreck happens. I have seen what happens first hand over a long career and I will tell you something, I’m sorry dosen’t fix that issue. Prayers for the entire family.

    • How sad are you pal? The mother made sure she had her seatbelt on correct? Guess the mother cared more for her own well being than her childrens well being. Think about it.

    • More sad to think a patent didn’t think enough of her kids to make sure they had a seat belt on and not speed.

    • At the end of the day does it matter if the female driver was the mother or not? Let’s ask the dead child if it matters. If the female driver wasn’t the mother that’s even worse. Because the mother thought the female drive was a responsible individual.

    • “There were three juvenile passengers in the vehicle, all children of Simmons.”

Did you even read the article? What about that sentence did you not understand? Yes, she absolutely should be charged with killing her child. It was entirely her fault.

I think the FIRST SENTENCE should prove they were her children ~ 🤷‍♀️

  4. Seatbelts saves lives.
    Don’t speed.
Stay OFF your phone while driving.
Remember, deer doesn’t share the road.
    Stay sober.

    Common sense isn’t it?

  5. This is sad news. Not to defend the driver but, I wonder IF by chance she left the responsibility up to the children to buckle up themselves. Of course the 2 younger children I believe should be in a car seat. Maybe they were but the older child might have been responsible to make sure all were buckled up. Either way it’s a sad situation for the children, father and other family members.

    • Agree! God only knows what happened and no matter where she was that day if it’s your time to go then you’re going one way or another. We should all not judge because from what I understand this was a great mother that loved all her children and 9 times out of 10, children will be a little hard headed and unbuckle themselves. Also, how many of us have been guilty of just running down the street and not buckled in?? I pray for her sanity and her family. Lord give her peace!!

  6. Some of these comments are sad. How likely is it that she turned around to realize her kids got their seatbelts off thinking it’s funny and as soon as she turned and seen that’s when she overcorrected. Do yall not realize how easy it would be for that to be what happened? I have a 3 year old that will put her arms out of the straps and it’s not because it’s not tight enough, it’s simply because they are kids and if they want to do something they will find a way. Instead of passing judgement you should pray for her and also pray that God softens your heart while you’re at it. If she was impaired or texting or anything that makes this truly her fault then yes she should be charged. None of you know what happened so stop judging and pray for her and her family.

  7. If you are rejoicing over the prosecution of a mother that is totally destroyed over this then you truly lead a sad sad life. I pray that your life gets better and you’re able to look into your own deep problems before ripping into a grieving mother that has kids that could be reading your comments right now.

    • Bottom line is she neglected the children she broke the law and put her own safety in front of her children’s safety!
