Relative Charged In $275K Elder Fraud Case

SMITHFIELD – A 30-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than a quarter of a million dollars from her 87-year-old grandmother in a case authorities are calling a serious breach of financial trust.

Jennifer Lea Snead of N. Main Street in Four Oaks was taken into custody by Four Oaks Police on October 9, on warrants issued by Smithfield Police. She faces two felony counts: exploitation of a disabled or elder adult and embezzlement of funds exceeding $100,000.

Police and court documents allege that Snead was responsible for managing her grandmother’s finances but did not provide physical care for the elderly woman. Investigators say that beginning in June 2023 and continuing into this year, Snead misappropriated $275,145.93 for personal use.

A significant portion of the stolen funds—approximately $147,000—was reportedly spent on high-end jewelry.

Arrest warrants state Snead “…feloniously did knowingly while standing in a position of trust and confidence… and by deception, obtain and use the funds, assets and property of [the victim] with the intent to benefit someone other than [the victim], deprive [the victim] of the use, benefit, and possession of the funds and assets.”

Snead is being held in custody under a $1 million secured bond. She has been assigned a court-appointed attorney and is scheduled to appear in court on October 30.

Smithfield Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

  1. Choose well before you put your trust in others with your financial care and well being. It’s amazing and heartbreaking for the ones you love to exhibit such actions.

  2. It is so sad to see this,my mother almost became a victim of this hanious crime by her own family members that just decided to show up after my father’s passing, but luckily they were stopped before they could do any more serious damage. Thank goodness that girl is away from that poor lady.
