Pedestrian Killed While Crossing Clayton Boulevard

CLAYTON — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday night while attempting to cross Clayton Boulevard (US Highway 70), according to Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. when the pedestrian was hit by a Toyota SUV while crossing the eastbound lanes near Enterprise Drive. Clayton Police, Johnston County EMS, and Clayton Fire Department responded to the scene.

According to witness statements and accident reconstruction, the pedestrian had just left the Dunkin’ Donuts on Enterprise Drive and initially crossed the westbound lanes of Clayton Boulevard before entering the median. As the individual attempted to cross the eastbound lanes, they were struck by the oncoming SUV.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Eastbound lanes of Clayton Boulevard were closed for nearly three hours as investigators processed the scene. The road was reopened at approximately 11:30 p.m.

No charges have been filed at this time. The fatal accident remains under investigation by the Clayton Police Department.
