Scam Alert: Man Posing As A Plumber Accused Of Defrauding Homeowner

CLEVELAND COMMUNITY – A Johnston County man was defrauded out of several hundred dollars after hiring a man he thought was a plumber.

Cameron Elijah Hairston, age 25, of Raleigh, with former addresses in Clayton and Angier, was arrested June 1 and charged with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony.

The victim told authorities they need some plumbing repair work at their home in May 2025 and located Hairston on the NextDoor app.

Hairston, who reportedly claimed he was a plumber, went to the victim’s Cleveland area home and was pre-paid $537 for the job. Hairston did not return on the date he originally promised but when he did return several days afterwards he requested an additional $265 for parts. The victim paid the additional $265.

Hairston never returned and never completed the repair work he was hired to perform, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim lost a total of $802.
