U.S. Postal Service Employee Arrested In Theft Investigation

CLAYTON – A U.S. Postal Service worker and former police officer has been arrested in connection with a mail theft and fraud investigation.

James Cartwright, 51, of Clayton, was taken into custody Monday, Sept. 8, by Clayton Police detectives. He faces multiple charges, including felony obtaining property by false pretenses, felony larceny by an employee, and misdemeanor larceny.

According to Police Chief Greg Tart, the investigation began on Aug. 11, when a report was filed about a stolen gift card and suspected mail tampering. Authorities later determined that Cartwright had used the stolen card to purchase gas at a Speedway on Clayton Boulevard.

Cartwright, who is employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Clayton was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.

Clayton Police said they are working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to determine whether Cartwright may be connected to other cases involving stolen mail and gift cards. The investigation is ongoing.

  1. We’ve had missing mail a few times in the past 5 years, and our mailing address is Clayton…wondering if he is the reason.

  2. That is my post office!!! I sent three birthday cards out of that post office in one month two years ago that never were delivered. I complained to the post master there and they blew me off. Soon after, I saw similar complaints on community chat boards. We have had several incoming birthday/holiday cards show up on my email delivery alert from the post office that either weren’t delivered or had been opened. I seriously doubt this was an isolated incident at that post office location.

  3. this doesn’t surprise me. every christmas we get empty envelopes that had contained gift cards. i reported well over a year ago. This dude is fortunate enough to have a job, and he blew it. good luck in jail and getting a job in the future you scum bag.

  4. I live in Clayton as well and never received my birthday card from my mother . It’s a federal crime to interfere with the mail and he needs to be charged as such. I’ve had problems with my mail disappearing ever since I’ve moved here a few years ago.

  5. We reported stolen mail from Clayton post office in March. Filed a report with postal inspection. Also spoke with postmaster who rudely told me she would not follow up.
