Gunshots Disrupt Baseball Game At Public Park

SMITHFIELD – A Labor Day weekend pickup baseball game at Smith-Collins Park was briefly thrown into chaos after gunshots were fired during an on-field dispute.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, at the park located on East Lee Street. According to the Smithfield Police Department, a disagreement broke out among players during the game, leading to a confrontation on the field.

Police allege that Maria Gonzalez, 46, of Smithfield, became concerned that her husband was about to be physically assaulted. In response, she reportedly retrieved a handgun from her purse and discharged two rounds into the ground.

The shots caused panic among those present, with players and bystanders quickly scattering. Gonzalez also attempted to leave the scene but was located by responding officers.

Gonzalez was charged with misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon and cited for discharging a firearm within city limits, a violation of town ordinance. She was released after posting a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 21.

A 9mm handgun was recovered and seized as evidence. No injuries were reported.

  1. Kids were being kids. Dad should not have been on the field. Why is mom even carrying gun into park for a pickup game? She was afraid hubby was about to be physically assaulted? WTH? By whom? Another parent? A kid? Come on parents (these parents), let these children learn good sportsmanship without mommy and daddy jumping in!!!! Chances are they’d turn out to be better human beings. Now, you’ve ruined that chance for them most likely. Do better.

  2. @Random. Yes, I was wrong. I assumed with these “adults” they must have been amongst a field of kids but thank you for correcting my mistake. Now my point is even more valid…the adults are foolish children. Have a blessed day
