Report: Convicted Felon Tries To Grab Shotgun After Crashing Car In High-Speed Chase

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A convicted felon is back in custody after allegedly shooting at an innocent motorist, leading authorities on a two-county pursuit, and attempting to reach for a shotgun after crashing his vehicle.

Murad Terrall Taylor, 38, of Garner, was arrested Friday afternoon following a violent and chaotic series of events that began around 2:44 p.m. near a motel on Veteran’s Parkway in Johnston County.

A 30-year-old woman told deputies she had just left a motel near I-40 when she noticed a man staring at her. The suspect reportedly followed her onto Veteran’s Parkway. As the woman approached the NC 50 intersection, the man fired a shotgun at her vehicle, striking the passenger-side door.

She quickly pulled into a nearby store and called 911.

Deputies soon spotted the suspect’s black Nissan Rogue on Cornwallis Road and attempted a traffic stop. Taylor, however, refused to pull over, initiating a high-speed chase that led officers onto Interstate 40 and into neighboring Wake County.

The pursuit came to an end on Jones Sausage Road when Taylor collided with another car and a parked 18-wheeler.

As officers approached the wrecked Nissan, they reportedly saw Taylor reaching under the passenger seat where a shotgun was wedged. Despite being tased, Taylor resisted arrest and continued to fight officers as he tried to dislodge the shotgun. Deputies were able to subdue him before he could grab the gun.

He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, where authorities say he also threatened hospital staff.

Taylor is facing numerous charges, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a firearm by a felon, discharging a weapon into occupied property, resisting a public officer, reckless driving, speeding, open container of alcohol violation, and misdemeanor marijuana possession.

The black Nissan Rogue was seized under North Carolina’s Run and Done law, which allows for the forfeiture of vehicles used in felony-level evasion.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

  1. He has a long history of felony assaults including firearms. However the judge reduced his bond from 2 million to 75k so he should be able to kill someone by the weekend.

  2. According to the court records, his bond was lowered to $75,000 by Judge James Craig! He will likely get out on bond and continue to be a threat to society. We need to vote these people out!!!

  3. The Law Enforcement did their job, now it’s up to the judge that allows him to plea bargain and get little time. Sorry court system.

  4. Because of Gov cooper and democrats, these dangerous people are being arrested and let go. You have to jail criminals! Stop forcing us to live with them and coming in contact with them.

  5. The man is a savage and not capable of living in a moral society. He needs to be put away. There is no rehabilitating evil.

  6. There will never be true justice until judges are held accountable for their poor decision making. Police can be personally sued if they do something wrong and it is time to end immunity from lawsuits for judges. This savage should never have been let out of jail. This is on the judges hands.

  7. Too bad he didn’t actually reach the shotgun. Then the deputies could have brought the justice that the court systems never will.

  8. Law Enforment Officers are doing a GREAT Job, ONLY to let the Judges/Judicial System, to let these Criminals BACK out.
