Johnston County Priest Arrested On Felony Solicitation Charge

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A Catholic priest at St. Ann Catholic Church in Johnston County was arrested early Monday morning and charged with felony solicitation of prostitution, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Clemente Guerrero-Olvera, 47, was taken into custody around 1:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the church, located along U.S. Highway 70 Business West near Clayton. Deputies were in the area searching for a missing juvenile when they encountered Guerrero-Olvera under suspicious circumstances.

A patrol deputy searching the church grounds reportedly spotted a young man inside a parked vehicle and another man attempting to flee on foot behind the church. The deputy detained the individual who had been running, later identified as Guerrero-Olvera, and located a 20-year-old male in the vehicle.

Authorities said the investigation revealed Guerrero-Olvera had arranged to meet the 20-year-old via the dating app Grindr, allegedly for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. The meeting reportedly took place on church property, where Guerrero-Olvera told deputies he resides. Investigators believe this may not have been the first such encounter involving the priest at that location.

According to the St. Ann Catholic Church website, Guerrero-Olvera serves as a parochial vicar—an assistant priest who supports the pastoral work of the parish under the direction of the pastor.

The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh issued a written statement Monday afternoon confirming it had been notified of Guerrero-Olvera’s arrest and that he had been “immediately removed from ministry in the Diocese of Raleigh.”

“While Fr. Clemente deserves a full presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, his priestly faculties in the Diocese of Raleigh have been revoked and he will be returned to his order while legal and canonical authorities further investigate this matter,” the statement read.

Guerrero-Olvera was booked at the Johnston County Detention Center and later released on a $2,500 secured bond.

Ja’Quavis Brinson, 20, of Benson, was charged with misdemeanor prostitution. He was released on an unsecured bond.

Deputies emphasized that the missing juvenile incident that initially led them to the church parking lot was unrelated to Guerrero-Olvera’s arrest.

  1. Thank goodness the General Assembly has spent so much time and effort protecting us from transgender bathroom attacks!

  2. I hate to hear this happening should have taken to a hotel etc not church property at least it wasn’t a minor.

    • Shouldn’t be occurring anywhere! He is a priest and is supposed to remain celibate. Goes against the Bible, he needs to be removed permanently from the priesthood. Thank goodness not a minor for sure.

      • LoL But the Bible is okay with rape, murder, slavery and war.

I don’t think paying someone for illegal services on a specific type of property should bother anyone too much, when real harm is okayed.

  3. This is EXACTLY why mortal men, like The Pope or any other priest, cannot be the head of The Church. They sin just like we ALL do. Only Jesus is sinless; therefore, He is the only trustworthy “head” of The Church. We can approach Jesus directly, without the use of a human, sinful mediator. Why? Jesus Christ is The Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21) and the only mediator between mankind and God (1 Timothy 2:5). Lastly, the New Testament teaches there are only to be elders (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9), deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11) – but not priests. With that being said, I pray this man repents, cries out to God for forgiveness, and changes his wicked ways. If he submits from the heart to God, God will remove all of this mans sinful desires. Lord help him…

    • @Another I think you need to go back to bible school…… a lot of your assertions are just plain wrong.

      1. Aaron and his descents (tribe of Levi) are the high priests — not Jesus (Exodus 29:29 – 30, Leviticus 8:12, 16:32)

      2. Both Job (Job 38:25) and Abram (Genesis 22:18) (not just Jesus) were sinless (literally “blameless before God)

      3. Throughout the bible the role of “priests” is well-defined (Leviticus 1-7, Exodus 27:20-21, Numbers 6:23-27, and many more)

    • No offense, but the most religious people are the ones causing the most problems. Must be nice to be able to blame an imaginary bad guy then be forgiven by an imaginary good guy. Zero responsibility taken.

  4. Let me go down the rabbit hole. Who cares what adults do with their private parts when neither falls into a protected class?

    • @Allan: In this state, prostitution is illegal. You wanna change the laws, thats fine. You want to break them, thats not.
