Fake Website Costs Local Woman Thousands

BENSON – A Benson woman lost thousands of dollars after mistakenly calling a phone number on a fraudulent website.

In February, the 78 year-old victim became concerned her Facebook account may have been hacked. She attempted to search for a customer service number for Facebook and landed on a fraudulent website.

The victim called the number on the website and was told she needed to send $7,017 to fix the problem.

The elderly woman withdrew the money from the bank and purchased prepaid gift cards, then provided the card numbers to the scammer.

Later that day she told a friend about the incident and realized it was a scam.

  1. If you are asked to pay for anything with gift cards and you follow through then you deserve to lose your money!!!!! These scams are all over tv, social media and the world wide web, there’s no way anyone has not heard the warnings over and over!

  2. Any person that is over the age of 30,that has a Facebook account, needs a mental evaluation.
