High-Speed Two-County Chase Ends Near Benson

DUNN — A high-speed pursuit spanning two counties ended early Friday morning when a stolen vehicle crashed near the I-95/I-40 interchange in Johnston County. At least two individuals were taken into custody following the chase, which began in Harnett County.

The incident started around 2:10 a.m., when Dunn Police attempted to stop the driver of a stolen car on E. Cumberland Street (US Highway 421). The suspect refused to stop, initiating a chase that reached speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour while traveling northbound on Interstate 95.

As the pursuit crossed into Johnston County, a North Carolina State Trooper joined the effort near the county line. Authorities reported that the fleeing vehicle suffered a blown rear tire during the chase, forcing the driver to slow to about 50 miles per hour.

While attempting to exit from I-95 onto Interstate 40, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which careened into a nearby tree line.

Several occupants jumped from the car and attempted to flee on foot. At least two suspects were apprehended at the scene.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.

Authorities have not yet released the names of those arrested.
