Johnston County Man Faces 54 Felony Fraud, False Pretense Charges

Warrants accuse man of obtaining nearly $1 million from false travel insurance claims

CLAYTON – North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced Friday the arrest of Michael Gerard Renna, 50, of 258 Chatsworth Lane, Clayton. Renna was charged with 26 counts of insurance fraud, 18 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and 10 counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, all felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Renna of obtaining $955,640.65 and attempting to obtain another $887,571.02 from 12 travel insurance companies by forging medical documents and altering ID forms, credit card statements and airline flight information provided to the insurance companies to support his insurance claims.

The offenses occurred between 2020 and 2024.

Special agents arrested Renna on Friday, Aug. 15. He was given a $1 million secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Johnston County District Court on Aug. 18

“I want to thank our special agents for the hard work they put into this case,” Commissioner Causey said. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

  1. Another person taking things that does not belong to him. Integrity and honesty is a dying characteristic in today’s society. My advice…trust no one.

      • When I posted that – there were no comments showing…on my end at least. They may hold them for approval, I have no clue. I am glad to see there were three made at least.

          • It doesn’t – there were none that were showing. Like o said I am glad people had made three comments before mine – but they obviously if they were showing on my end do you think I would have made that post ? No I would not. Even so there are still not as many comments on this crime as there have been on others that do not involve nearly as many felonies – this is just white collar crime and it doesn’t seem to get nearly the attention – even nationwide as other types of crimes. We been conditioned as a society to put our focus elsewhere- even if the crimes are not as numerous. We still treat marijuana crimes and criminal like the worst of the worst and want those locked away for years – maybe not everyone thinks like that – but so many that NC as well as the federal government refuse to reclassify it. I don’t know your personal thoughts on this so I am not speaking to that – just in general.
No crow here – just facts

  2. A dozen insurance companies? Sounds like he knows every crack and crevice in the travel insurance industry. These clever thieves never use their.sharp wits for good. SAD.

  3. How can someone get away with this , when these insurance companies, fight us to the penny, every single time. We need the most of them.
