No Charges Filed After 83-Year-Old Benson Man Shoots Grandson In Apparent Self-Defense

BENSON – An 83-year-old Benson man will not face charges after allegedly shooting his grandson Wednesday evening in what police believe was an act of self-defense.
Benson Police responded to a reported shooting at 5:44 p.m. at 101 East Kennedy Circle. When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was transported to WakeMed for treatment and was listed in stable condition at last report.

According to investigators, the elderly resident of the home fired a shotgun at his grandson during an altercation, injuring him.
After reviewing the case with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, authorities determined that no charges would be filed at this time, citing evidence consistent with self-defense.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.

Records show that the same East Kennedy Circle address was the site of a July 2024 search warrant executed by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect on narcotics and firearms charges.
Authorities have not released the names of either the grandfather or grandson involved in Wednesday’s incident.
