Lockdown Lifted At Smithfield-Selma High After Student Brings BB Gun To Campus
SMITHFIELD – Smithfield-Selma High School was placed on lockdown early Wednesday morning after a student reportedly brought a BB gun onto campus, prompting a swift response from school officials and law enforcement.
According to Johnston County Public Schools, the incident began around 6:45 a.m. when the school’s weapon detection system alerted staff to the presence of a potential weapon. Law enforcement was immediately notified, and the student in question was quickly apprehended.
Officials later confirmed that the item discovered was an airsoft BB gun, not a firearm. No injuries were reported, and all students and staff remained safe throughout the lockdown.
“The lockdown has been lifted and the school will continue its normal operations,” the district said in a statement. “Our school staff are trained to enter these lockdown procedures anytime it is deemed necessary out of an abundance of caution for our students and staff.”
The juvenile was taken into custody by the Smithfield Police Department. Authorities have not yet released further details, including any potential charges.
Johnston County Public Schools expressed gratitude for the swift action by school staff and local law enforcement, crediting their partnership for maintaining safety during the incident.

Kid must be a moron!
He should be treated as if it were real.
He is lucky he wasnt shot dead. These kids trying to be “Hard” by carrying these look-a-likes around. No one going to stand around and wonder if its real, you point it at wrong person and end up DEAD. OH and Great job by SRO!!!!
We use to take our hunting rifle to school in the truck with truck unlocked and keys in the ignition never had any trouble
Definitely not anymore during the times of extremely fragile and mentally unstable human race. Those were the best of times.
Old school, Yea well, these morons are not the same as us. Video games and social media has screwed them all up!!! We drove the buses as seniors… these kids can’t get themselves dressed wearing pajamas to school….
It took 3 days for something to happen at JoCo schools..might be a new record
You’re a clown. How long did it take for some transgender to shoot up a school🤔?
Yes we drove the bus didn’t wear bicycle helmets and new better than eat lead paint why do we need to protect **** kids need to weed them out before they reproduce so darwin says
It definitely wasn’t a BB gun. Multiple students have posted pics and video of the alleged weapon.
The school is in the middle of a cover up. The “BB gun” made it all the way inside the school, to the backside of the gym.
It’s no cover up. The kids enter from the bus lot into the gym lobby then go through the weapon detectors. Once they are screened they enter the gym and wait to go as a group down to the cafeteria for breakfast. There’s a separate entrance for carpool and student drivers. They also get screened at those entrances. In this case, the kid came through the weapon detector, set it off, was challenged by the staff member working the detector. At that time he attempted to pull the BB gun from his book bag, the magazine fell out and he took off running into the gym with the BB gun. The staff member immediately called on the radio for a lockdown …There were only a few students in the gym, since buses were just beginning to off load, so of course they ran out, and back onto the bus along with all the other students who had not yet been screened or were still on the buses. Another good procedure the school follows is not unloading all the buses at once for safety reasons. They took them to Smithfield middle school. The SRO took the suspect in custody within seconds …protocol was followed to a “T”regardless of what kids are telling their parents and people are putting on Facebook ….
You can Monday morning quarterback it all you want, But it could not have been handled any better… and as far as saying, this is the reason you want your kid to have a cell phone. It’s actually a reason for them not to have their cell phone. They’re calling their parents, giving misinformation. Parents are turning around putting it on Facebook as misinformation, Overloading the Wi-Fi and then parents are coming to the school getting in the way .. I mean, if school is in lockdown you’re not gonna be able to enter the school or even get on campus so why are you rushing to get there? Allow law-enforcement to get there and do their job.. Law enforcement practices this stuff all summer they know what they’re doing, regardless of what some lunatics on Facebook might say…
Amen! 🙋♀️
Another lockdown today 8/28. My god how can children learn in this chaos?
Because of nearby police activity. It had nothing to do with an issue in the school. Post all of the information instead of just partial information.
I didn’t say it was due to an issue at the school. I said that they were locked down again and how difficult it must be to actually learn , crazy idea, in an environment like that. I know why they were locked down, a man was pulled over by police by the secu and he ran in the direction of the school. Wouldn’t you agree that these lockdowns create a difficult learning environment?
Yeah, guess the police shouldn’t pull people over near schools! 🙄
Why would we want to post the facts? That just gets in the way of a good story. Telling the whole story takes away the opportunity for outrage and dramatics… lol
Thank you. Parents are teaching their children to jump to blaming everyone else for their problems. I saw a video saying they “hate this school and that it could’ve been so much worse but the school system is worried about phones”. I see the same, it could’ve been worse but IT WASN’T! NO PREVENTATIVE MEASURE IS 100% FAULTY PROOF. F the phones! Thank God for the officers and staff there. Their quick actions kept our babies safe. My son was there in the gym when this happened and the thought that this could’ve been the worst day of my life. I dont blame the school, im not 100% sure if I can blame the kid. If this were to ever happen I’d prefer it to be exactly how this happened than Uvalde. Lock down every day if you need to. Keep my babies safe.
We did not have things like this happening when Dr. Bracy was running the show. Now, with Dr. Pearce in charge, we have 2 lockdowns in 2 days. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Really? No lockdowns when Bracy was superintendent? You sure about that? 100% sure?
Not 2 in 2 days.
Thank God we have a cell phone ban in schools. That really stopped the threats and trouble in public schools.
Speaking of God, they need to bring Him back to all schools.
ummm I remember several lockdowns at SSS last year when Bracey was the Super. Not his fault at all, as he was a “hands off” don’t do anything type guy, but blaming Pearce is ridiculous….The cell phones did cause panic and misinformation and parents posting false info on FB and coming to the school getting in the way…The students hadn’t put them away yet.
Charge the mother too for raising a fool.
Make it a state law to wear uniforms & bring God back into schools might help
Like it helped in Minnesota last week?
I highly doubt it was bb gun it looked too real plus students are saying the saw the bullets fall to the ground when he tried loading the gun and the student only got suspended 10 days and will be able to return back to SSS!
