Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Freight Train

SMITHFIELD — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Sunday afternoon near Fuller Street in the Smithfield city limits. The incident was reported at approximately 12:43 p.m.

Police Chief Pete Hedrick confirmed that one person died at the scene. The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by Smithfield Police.
