Deputies Stop Teen Driver Going 125 MPH

SELMA — An 18-year-old Selma man is facing charges after being caught driving more than double the speed limit Tuesday evening in Johnston County.

Around 6:39 p.m., a deputy with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office SAFE Team was patrolling along NC Highway 39 near Selma when a southbound Chevy Camaro reportedly raced by at a shocking speed. Using radar, the deputy recorded the car traveling at 125 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.

The driver, identified as Joham Vargas Vieyra, was pulled over near Old Beulah Road. According to officials, Vieyra told the deputy he was on his way to the gym to work out.

Vieyra’s work out plans were put on hold. Deputies arrested the teen driver at the scene and charged him with speeding. He was later released on a $2,000 secured bond.

His Camaro was impounded.
