CLAYTON – September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library invites students from kindergarten through high school to sign up for or renew their library cards.

“A library card is one of the most important school supplies a student can have,” said Youth Services Supervisor Grace Davis. “It provides access to tools and support that help with homework, research, and projects throughout the year, making it easier for students to succeed.”

Elementary students can listen and read along with Wonderbooks, which build literacy skills and inspire a love of reading. To develop additional important abilities, Launchpads offer interactive games that strengthen math, reading, and science skills without needing internet access, making learning available anytime. Another powerful tool for young learners is Active Reader Kits. They have themed books with games and activities that build reading skills, spark curiosity, and encourage hands-on exploration in areas like math, science, art, and history. Studies show that integrating art with STEM can boost creativity and critical thinking by up to 30 percent.

As students advance to middle school, free Wi-Fi and quiet study areas become especially valuable, offering an ideal environment for focused learning and collaboration. They can explore a wide range of online research databases and educational videos that deepen their understanding of complex subjects and support homework and project work. Language learning tools also offer opportunities to develop communication skills important for academic and future career success. Additionally, library staff are available to guide students in finding the right books and materials, helping them tackle assignments confidently and build strong research skills.

For high school students, the library offers resources that support academic success and creativity. Through a parent or guardian’s library account, teens can borrow Chromebooks, photography equipment, and recording tools from the Library of Things. These items help enhance creative projects, presentations, and multimedia learning. Access to technology like laptops and tablets also strengthens students’ ability to complete homework and projects effectively, according to Pew Research Center. The library also offers college preparation materials, including SAT and ACT study guides, job search resources to support career readiness, and advanced research databases that empower students to excel in challenging assignments and prepare for higher education and beyond.

“Access to the library opens the door to discovery and growth,” added Davis. “It provides expert guidance and creative opportunities that ignite curiosity, build confidence, and enrich students’ lives both inside and beyond school.”

As a reminder, library cards are free for Johnston County residents. Children must be at least 5 years old to get a card, and their adult caregiver must also have a library card. To get started, fill out a preregistration form online at townofclaytonnc.org/library. Digital-only cards provide immediate access to eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming videos through Libby and Kanopy. To get a permanent card for borrowing physical items, visit the library’s temporary location (446 East Second Street) within seven days with a valid photo ID and proof of county address.
