Summer Youth Employment Program Celebrates Successful Fourth Year

GOLDSBORO – Last week, Wayne County celebrated the successful completion of its 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program, recognizing 39 local high school and college students for their service and accomplishments. A closing ceremony was held to award certificates and reflect on the impact of the six-week initiative. Running from June 17 through July 25, the program offered paid hands-on internships across various County departments.
Now in its fourth year, the initiative continues to provide young people with valuable workplace experience and a deeper understanding of local government.
“This internship gave me the chance to learn as much as possible,” said Stephanie Alvarez, Animal Services Intern. “Whether it was understanding how animals behave, learning proper handling and cleaning techniques, or watching how the animal shelter operates behind the scenes, I soaked up everything I could. I walked in every day ready to grow, because when you care about something as much as I care about animals, learning never really feels like work.”
Interns were placed in departments that matched their interests, including public safety, administration, community development, and environmental services.
“This internship helped me connect the dots between classroom learning and real-world application,” said Brielle Crespo, Environmental Health Intern. “I gained hands-on experience in environmental health and saw how public service professionals are stewards of community well-being. It made me even more passionate about using my education to serve others.”
Wayne County Commissioner Antonio Williams spoke at the closing event, encouraging participants to consider long-term careers in public service.
“You put in the work, and that’s what truly matters,” said Commissioner Williams. “Wayne County has a place for you. If you ever want to turn this summer job into a full-time career, the door is always open. We’ll be here to support you when that time comes.”
The Wayne County Summer Youth Employment Program is part of the County’s commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders through civic engagement, workforce development, and mentorship. The Board of Commissioners launched the program in 2022 to inspire young adults to engage in community service through local government and to introduce them to the diverse range of careers available in public service.
