GOLDSBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a proposal to widen East Ash Street, build two roundabouts and reconstruct the street’s traffic pattern at U.S. 70.

An open house will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19 inside the Greenwood Middle School cafeteria at 3209 E. Ash St. The informal meeting will be an opportunity for individuals to look at preliminary design maps, talk to the project team and submit comments.

The department proposes to widen about a mile of East Ash Street (U.S. 70 Business) from what is mostly three lanes now to four lanes with a raised median from approximately Meadow Lane Elementary School to U.S. 70.

In addition, the project would:

  • Construct multilane roundabouts on East Ash Street at Oak Forest Road and at Meadow Road/Commercial Drive;
  • Reconstruct and realign where East Ash Street intersects U.S. 70 into a reduced conflict intersection that redirects drivers into turning right onto the four-lane highway; and
  • Build a 5-foot sidewalk on the north side of East Ash Street and a 10-foot multi-use path on the south side.

The proposed changes are intended to reduce congestion and improve safety for vehicular traffic and pedestrians.

People may view project details on the NCDOT public input website, where questions or comments may be submitted to the project team. In addition, people may leave a message for the project team by calling 984-205-6615 (enter project code 11571); or send an email to east-ash-street-improvements@publicinput.com.

Comments received by Sept. 19 will be considered toward the final design.
