Benson-Area Homicide Victim Identified

BENSON – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of a man found shot to death inside a car early Sunday morning.

Emmanuel Kwame Gbedee, 57, of Durham was found deceased in the back seat of a car on Holley Grove Road near Godwin Lake Road in the Meadow community. Gbedee died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Around 1:06am Sunday, a state trooper located a vehicle just off the roadway, and next to a building, with the four-way emergency flashers activated. The trooper located the deceased male in the car.

Prior to arriving at the scene, troopers and deputies were told a suspicious person dressed in all black was walking around a shelter at the address. The trooper arrived just prior to deputies.

In a Monday press release, Sheriff’s Major Jeff Caldwell said no suspect has been identified and the investigation remains ongoing.
