JOHNSTON COUNTY — The 2025–2026 school year began on a high note Monday morning as approximately 37,000 students returned to classrooms across Johnston County’s 42 public schools.

Traffic was noticeably heavier around campuses as families navigated morning drop-offs, but despite the congestion, the first day went smoothly, with no major issues reported.

At River Dell Elementary, the excitement of a new year was evident. Parents hugged their children tightly, snapped first-day photos, and waved goodbye as students entered the building. Some children arrived by bus, others in cars, and a few even rode their bicycles—an increasingly common sight around the school.

More than 2,600 teachers across the district welcomed students back after the summer break, ready to begin another year of learning and growth.

District officials noted that while initial enrollment is estimated at around 37,000 students, a finalized official attendance number will be confirmed after the first 10 days of school.

The seamless opening reflects months of preparation by school staff, administrators, and transportation teams. Officials expressed optimism for a productive and engaging academic year ahead.
