Steven Douglas Edwards

Steven “Buffalo” Douglas Edwards, age 72, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 3, 1953, in Johnston County, Steve was the son of the late Melvin Edwards and Evelyn Rains Edwards. He was preceded in death by his brother, Phil Edwards, and by his two favorite pets, Prissy and Annie.
Steve was a long-time member of Princeton United Methodist Church and a pillar of his community. Alongside his father, brothers, and sister Phyllis, Steve helped carry on and operate several successful grocery stores known as Edwards IGA’s, leaving a lasting legacy of service.
A passionate and devoted sports enthusiast, Steve was a die-hard Carolina Tar Heels fan and loved watching all kinds of sports. He enjoyed playing golf, water skiing, and fishing. Some of his favorite moments were spent traveling to the mountains and the beach. Above all, Steve was most devoted to his family. After four years of dating, he married the love of his life, and together they shared 34 beautiful years of marriage.
Steve will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife, LuNelle Woodard Edwards; son, Adrian Tyndall (Ava) of Pikeville; daughter, Taylor Rae Overfield (Noble Overfield III) of Princeton; brother, Bruce Edwards (Rene) of Stella; sisters, Rosemary Gatewood (Doug) of Four Oaks, Phyllis Edwards of Princeton, and Sara Moore (Steve) of Goldsboro; and his lifelong friend and “brother from another mother,” Doug Stallings (Loretta) of Goldsboro, brother-in-law, Donald Woodard (Ada Jean) of Eureka, He is also survived by Mrs. Ann Stancil Edwards, wife of Melvin Edwards; grandchildren: Ajay Felts, Hunter Tyndall, Wesley Tyndall, Wyatt Overfield, Memphis Overfield, Raelyn Overfield, and River Overfield; great-grandchildren: Ethan Tyndall, Matthew Tyndall, Emily Tyndall, Adalyn Tyndall, and Hailey Tyndall; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other cherished family members
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial service will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
