As sweaters, boots, and scarves are being stored away, and the summer gear is being pulled from the storage bins, if you’re anything like me, the mall will soon become your best friend. Summer started officially three days ago, but I couldn’t help myself (sigh) and have already found great pieces of clothing in colors that black women should be wearing this summer. Check them out below!

1.Yellow

As a deep brown-skinned woman, I have typically shied away from the standard yellow, with fear of looking like a walking sunflower. As a result, dark mustard yellow has been my safe choice. I can say in the last few weeks, (real) yellow has changed my life. Have you ever bought something and just stared at yourself in it? Two weeks ago, I bought a yellow and beige dress for a wedding, got home, and took about 1,000 selfies in it (I didn’t want to keep others waiting for my dressing room just because I was busy twirling around.) The brightness of the yellow against my skin is amazing and I regret not trying such a beautiful bold version of yellow sooner. You need yellow in your life. Lemonade for everyone!

  1. Cobalt Blue

Cobalt blue has been a long-time favorite of mine. Cobalt blue is a color that screams, “I’m here!” and instantly turns heads! It is said that purple represents royalty, but cobalt blue definitely gives it a run for its money.  Depending on the accenting colors, cobalt blue is a color that is bold and fierce or can become playful and laid-back. In April, I purchased a cobalt blue tulle skirt and had numerous people compliment it as I walked the streets of D.C. I was smiling ear to ear. I need more of it!

  1. Orange

Two words: Michelle. Obama. Twitter drooled in adoration when our First Lady emerged at the last State of the Union address in January 2016. While she is no stranger to looking fabulous in beautiful dresses, her choice of the night was undoubtedly ON POINT! She wore a sleeveless, marigold (orange-yellow) midi dress by designer Narciso Rodriguez. People were so in love with the dress that the $628 dress sold out on Neiman Marcus’ website in MINUTES. The contrast between the color against her skin tone was perfect. Need more convincing that orange is necessary for your life? Check out the women of the TV hit series “Orange Is The New Black” stunning in various shades of orange during a July 2015 beach-themed shoot here.

  1. Fuchsia/Hot Pink/Magenta

ALL three of these are personal favorites of mine. They are extremely fun and flirty colors that are good alternatives for someone who may not be a fan of Barbie pink. I have numerous solid pieces in this family of hues, both dark and light, and have also found them to serve as amazing pops of color (most recently pairing fuchsia flats with the yellow dress mentioned above! hint hint).
