The Curly Girl Collective hosted the first ever Curl Fest on June 22, 2014 in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The event aimed to bring together natural hair enthusiasts for a fun-filled day in the sun. It was a hit.
This summer kick off couldn’t have prayed for better weather. The sun was shining the entire time. Kids were running around playing games, ladies were sunbathing, and friends were enjoying each other’s company. Great music spun by Mr. Hollywood DJ had the attendees on their feet. As you looked across the park, you could feel the great energy buzzing around. Not one person in attendance wasn’t enjoying themselves. Lining the side of the picnic were vendor tents. There was a range of product offerings like great hair care products from Eden Bodyworks and Curls, handcrafted jewelry from Adorn New York and vintage clothing from Jewel’s Vintage Closet. You could also grab a copy of Michael July’s book Afros.
The fashionistas held no punches at this event. The style seen at the event was unique and no two women were dressed the same. There were vintage inspired looks, bohemian, flirty femme and even some indie inspired ensembles. About halfway through the event, we asked the attendees their take on the event. Not a single person had anything but rave reviews. Each woman was enjoying herself, feeling empowered and meeting great, new people. Many of the guests mentioned their hopes for the event to return each year.
Congratulations to The Curly Girl Collective for an incredibly successful event!
Stay tuned for Part 2 of the event…
