Smithfield Woman Loses $6,000 In Scam

A 72 year-old Smithfield woman lost $6,000 in a scam last week. Police are investigating and warning others any type of payment requested to be made with a gift card is most likely a scam.

The victim said she was contacted by telephone indicating there was a problem with her Apple account.  The victim was told to obtain a Google Play gift card to pay the company to correct the problem.  By the time the victim realized she was being defrauded, she had already purchased $6,000 in Google Play gift cards and provided the card numbers to the scammer.

The victim contacted police the following day reporting the incident.
