Malicious Conduct Charge Filed Against Inmate

SMITHFIELD – A 19-year-old man jailed at the Johnston County Detention Center following his arrest June 12 is now charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner.

Mazaye Anthony James of Raleigh was apprehended last month after leading the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office on a chase in excess of 100 miles per hour on US 70. The pursuit ended on I-95 near Smithfield.

On July 15, James reportedly refused to leave his jail cell and attempted to spit on a detention officer. He was subsequently charged with the malicious conduct offense, a felony.

His bond was increased from $800,000 to $900,000.
