The choker, the big costume jewelry, the puffy coats and – of course – the glitter make up. Is it 1984 again? No, it’s 2016, and all of these things are making a major comeback. Since the end of the colorful decade of the 80s, glitter makeup has been seen as tacky and childish, something a 13 year old might rub on at a birthday party. Now, however, glitter makeup has become a popular new trend both on and off the runway.

Seen in several runway shows during the Fall 2016 New York Fashion Week, glitter makeup made quite a statement. Burberry, for example, used small gold flakes under the eyes and around the cheekbones of their models. Giambattista tried an approach to glitter makeup as an undertone at the root of the eyebrow, which dazzled. Markus Lupfer used a combination of the two, with black glitter on the eyelids and gold on the waterline. OK – so on the runway, anything looks good, right? But what about in real life?

Here are some ways to wear glitter makeup that won’t make you look 13 again:

Eyes:

When it comes to glitter, the eyes have it. A glittered eyeshadow is the most classic princess look of the season. Pair it with a nice winged liner and you’re ready for a night out. You won’t even need the flash in your pictures. Mixing shades is also a good idea, because it will add some dimension to your eyes and face. Try a lighter color, like white, tan, light blue or baby pink, in the corner of your eye, and slowly blend to a darker color, like brown, indigo, deep purple, red or even black, as you get to the outer edge.

Rachelle Smith gives a great example on her YouTube channel in a tutorial called “Barbie Girl Makeup Tutorial”

Lips

Doing a glitter lip is fun and freeing because you can really do whatever you want, as long as it’s glitter, and it’s on your lips. Any color will work, or a combination of colors if you’re feeling up to it. You can try a nice ombre from blue to purple or pink to silver, seriously – anything.

Cyndee Black does a great tutorial for a red glitter lip including a moisturizer and primer level that can show you how to do glitter lips at a professional level. The video is called “RED GLITTER LIPS makeup tutorial”

Many people attribute the new glitter makeup trend to the death of beloved David Bowie, but one other popular opinion is that it’s just fun. Glitter makeup is a way to get silly, and express the inner little girl in you who loved makeup before it was just a mundane task you did every morning as part of getting ready. Getting back to your youth in this way is one of the most fun and vibrant fashion trends of 2016.
