On May 23rd I embarked on my semi-unplanned month-long journey to Antigua Guatemala. For the first three days in Antigua, I had the pleasure of kicking off my adventure at The Good Hotel Antigua. Being that the city of Antigua caters mostly to tourism, hotels and hostels are plentiful in the area. Certain factors such as the type of accommodation, price, proximity to landmarks, and hotel food options might be a few factors in determining which particular hotel you would rather book your stay at. Depending on your specification requirements and tastes for hotel aesthetics, The Good Hotel Antigua will probably be your best option for those wanting a tranquil stay for a reasonable price.

Here are 5 reasons to choose The Good Hotel Antigua
1. Location

The Good Hotel Antigua is located just a short walk away from Antigua’s Parque Central. Here you will find an abundance of bars, restaurants, and internet cafes. You’ll be astounded when visiting the near by Choco Museo, the massive white cathedral, and the famous Arco de Santa Catalina. At Parque Central, you will fall in love with the many artisanal crafts, textiles, trinkets, and jewelry that’s being sold by the local street vendors. A few blocks away from Parque Central, there is a massive must-see local shopping destination named Mercado Central. I spent the majority of my time here exploring the array of offerings at the Mercado. You’ll be sure to find all types of seasonally grown fruits and vegetables as well as wonderful items to take back home with you or to enjoy during your stay.  I was able to purchase a beautiful artisan blanket that I have religiously used since being back in the States.

2. Modern Aesthetics

Can I tell yall how much I loved their concept of pairing concrete and wood? Their concrete stairs gave me so much life during my three-day stay! I even started to create my dream home that I am in no time ready to purchase. Their use of a wooden column, wooden beams and a huge wooden slide-barn door that separated the living space from the bathroom area was a modern take on rustic elements. The entire room accommodation was as if it were straight out of those HGTV shows that I never watch. The Good Hotel Antigua did an amazing job with incorporating the Guatemalan culture throughout the room and throughout the rest of the hotel with photographs of the local indigenous people, textiles, crafts, and various objects that are significant to the Guatemalan culture.

3. Hotel Garden

Being surrounded by nature is an absolute must for me and although I didn’t get a chance to spend more time in the area as I had planned on doing, their garden area is pretty useful for escaping the hustle and bustle of Antigua. The garden is also conveniently located near the bar and dining area. You’ll be able to enjoy a nice meal and a few drinks while relaxing near The Good Hotel’s lush green garden.

4. The Bar!

Most people know that I’m always down for a good drink and that’s exactly what The Good Hotel had to offer! Upon my arrival, I was treated to a complimentary glass of Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus tea). It was super delicious, floral, and refreshing. This was much needed after a long day of dragging two overly-heavy suitcases. I also had the chance to try Zacapa 23 Rum for the first time. It’s a spiced honey tasting rum that’s made locally in Guatemala. While starting my journey to Guatemala, I was very cautious of not having more than two drinks while at bars since I was a female traveling alone. However, because of the location of The Good Hotel and the placement of the bar area, I felt extremely safe and comfortable to enjoy several glasses of Zacapa 23.

5. Charity

The Good Hotel has a profit for non-profit strategy. For every booking that is made with The Good Hotel, $5 USD is donated to NGO, Ninos de Guatemala, that assists the children in receiving a quality education. In addition to the hotel partnering with NGO, they do an excellent job with supporting the local community. The Good Hotel partners with local craftsmen to produce handcrafted materials that they use throughout the hotel. They also offer a hospitality training program to long-time unemployed locals of Guatemala. After training, the locals receive on-the-job-training as well as a full-time salary from The Good Hotel. Because of their newly acquired skill set, the employed locals are then able to seek out other various jobs from other companies.
