Mmm chocolate, the snack is not only tasty and delicious, but can also serve as the inspiration behind your latest hairstyle. Chocolatey deep brown hair combined with red and pink undertones forms fall’s must-have hair color of 2016. Chocolate mauve hair also known as “chocolate rose gold” looks great on women of all shades.
Created by Hannah Edelman of the Brooklyn-based salon, Brush in Hand, the color can be a great way to update your look for the new year. In an interview with PopSugar, Edelman described how she came up with the blended style step-by-step, “the darkest brown started with red, yellow, and green. Then I added orange and purple and other random sh*t until I liked what I saw,” Edelman explained.” The final result per her client’s request was a “toned-down but not totally normal hue” of chocolate brunette with mauve tints.
While Edelman’s client went towards the lighter side of this trend, preferring an ombre with lowlights closer to pink, women of color with deeper complexions can go darker with highlights in shades of red and caramel to create a golden color. In many ways this hairstyle is a precursor to the plum hairstyle on black women we saw take the spotlight at the beginning of 2016.
A slightly new take on an old classic, we have seen black women such as Tyra Banks, Ashley Everett, and Rihanna dye their natural dark brown tresses various shades of red and pink for years but with chocolate mauve you use the ombre technique to layer into the color without it being too loud. A great idea if you happen to work in a conservative work place.
How to get the chocolate mauve look
To get the hairstyle, Edelman used Pravana Vivids dye hues and bleach to lighten her client’s hair to a light blonde. From there, she applied a baylayge painting technique to apply the color. Because this style is an extensive process sometimes taking three weeks or more, she suggests that you apply a mauve rinse as an alternative to getting this unique look.
How to protect colored hair
While it is fun to try new styles, a critical part of the process is taking care of your strands before and after a change. Be sure that you are well aware of the things you should know before coloring your tresses. Keep on hand, Ouidad’s color sense conditioner which is formulated to lock in color in between washes for longer periods of time. Or if you are a veteran of hair transitions, keep your hair in check with Kim Kimble’s hair repairing treatment. The smoothing product helps keep hair healthy by increasing its strength against breakage.
