Since living the natural hair life for 21 out of my 22 years, I can say it is not for the faint of heart. While rewarding, it can also difficult, time consuming, and confusing. There is so much information floating around and it can be hard to know what to in order to get the best results for your natural hair. On top of that, it can differ from season to season. Read on for some simple DIY natural hair treatments anyone can use to revitalize their hair this summer!

1. For Moisture: Tropical Hair Smoothie

Every naturalista knows the number one rule to keeping your hair healthy, happy, and growing is MOISTURE! No matter the season, hair type, length, or porosity… you need MOISTURE! In the summertime, it is especially important to make sure your mane is kept nourished because the combination of high temperature, humidity, and sun can strip your hair leaving it very dry and brittle. One way to make sure your hair gets moisture are deep conditioners, which are great to do before or on your wash day. Blak Iz Beautiful, better known as Janell B. Stewart, who is the author of Kinky Curly Coily Me, a popular website that provides excellent information for Black women with natural hair, whips up a tropical hair smoothie below. It (almost) looks good enough to drink!

2. For Growth- Essential Oils Spray or Oil Mixture

You’ve got moisture, now what about promoting fast growth? Essential oils can help you out. Essential oils are not only great fragrances, but each oil (tea tree, cedarwood, rosemary, and peppermint are a few examples) has properties that will help boost your hair growth and provide nourishment for your skin and nails. Personally, I am working on growing my hair thicker and have discovered that peppermint oil is one of the most effective essential oils to in hair growth. The peppermint essential oil on your scalp will give you the tingling sensation that assists in circulating blood to the follicles, which encourages hair growth! Judging by her length, peppermint and castor oil is doing U Love Megz’s hair wonders since 2009.

3. Leave In Conditioner Spray With Rosemary

Don’t want to use oils? Try a refreshing and quick water-based leave in treatment with essential oils. Rosemary is another essential oil popularly used for promoting hair growth.  It is an antibacterial herb that clears dandruff, which leads to better blood circulation of nutrients to the follicles. Rosemary essential oil is also known for giving your tresses a healthy shine and preventing hair from greying. Take a look at two videos showcasing how you can make rosemary essential oil leave in conditioning spray.

*For those who may not be aware, essential oils are EXTREMELY potent and should never be applied directly to the scalp. They must be diluted with water and carrier oils (jojoba, olive, almond, coconut, etc.) before use! *
